It doesn’t matter if you’re innocent or guilty of the crime you’ve been charged with; it’s a terribly frightening experience to face criminal charges in court. If you aren’t prepared for court, you can find yourself in a worse position.
The judge is in charge of the courtroom and, in some cases, is the determiner of your fate in the courtroom. You should never speak unless asked to by the court, including whispering and chatting in the gallery. How you are dressed will serve as your first impression by the judge and jury. Many courtrooms do not have a dress code, but traditionally it’s business casual. The rules can differ between courthouses, so it’s important to check with the courthouse your hearing will be held to ask about attire requirements and any additional regulations, like mask requirements.
Getting ready for court is a big deal, and it’s not a matter to take lightly. You should leave your home in plenty of time to arrive to court on time. Parking at most court facilities can be challenging, so plan in advance by locating the parking facilities at the courthouse.
